Bicycle Friendly University

The League of American Bicyclists has officially declared Temple a Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) with a Bronze level designation! (This is very exciting news.)

What is the BFU program?

BFU recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors. The BFU program provides the roadmap and technical assistance to create great campuses for cycling. The goal of the program is to inspire more action to build healthy, sustainable and livable institutions of higher education.

How is "bike friendliness" evaluated?

The League has determined essential elements known as The Five E's:

  1. Engineering: Creating safe and convenient places to ride and park
  2. Education: Giving people of all ages and abilities the skills and confidence to ride
  3. Encouragement: Creating a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling
  4. Enforcement: Ensuring safe roads for all users
  5. Evaluation & Planning: Planning for bicycling as a safe and viable transportation option

Based on the current progress of the institution, applicants can be awarded anywhere from an "honorable mention" to Platinum status.

What are the benefits?

You may be wondering what the big deal is - we got Bronze after all. However, many colleges and universities apply two or three times before they make it past an "honorable mention." Temple was awarded official bike friendly status the first time around - that means we are making tremendous progress in a short amount of time. The bike culture is alive and well - and growing fast!

BFU is a healthy competition that assists and motivates colleges and universities to improve their communities through biking. The League will provide Temple with free tools and resources as we reach for the ultimate Platinum status, and help us send the message of "biking as a simple solution to complex mobility, space, health and economic issues". This recent recognition will also build momentum to fast-track our progress even more.

So...

As the League puts it, with this BFU designation, "Temple joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities." It is safe to take pride in the university community's accomplishments and look towards the optimistic future that awaits us (corny, yes, but we love bikes).
