Getting Involved in the Sustainability Scene

One of the most common questions people ask our office is “How can I get involved?”

Well, here’s our answer!

With the Office of Sustainability

We are one busy office! Between Temple Thrift, block clean ups, Campus Sustainability Week, Recyclemania, and all of our other programs, we have plenty of volunteer opportunities! Volunteering with us is a great option if you a looking for a low-commitment way to get involved while still making a difference at Temple. If you want to stay up to date on all of our events, become a member on Owl Connect or follow us on social media.

With student orgs

Temple has a vibrant community of green student orgs who are always looking for new members! From activism to business to politics and everything in between, you can find a sustainable student org that fits your interests. And if not, create a new one! Our office is always happy to help new organizations by welcoming them into the Green Council.

With external groups

While there are plenty of great opportunities to get involved here, sustainability in Philadelphia extends far beyond Temple’s campus! There are countless community gardens for those who want to get their hands dirty, as well as organizations like Friends of the Wissahickon, TTF Watershed, the Schuylkill Center,  and Fairmount Park Conservancy who work with volunteers to look after our parks and waterways. Perhaps you’d like to work more directly with the city (Tree Philly, Parks and Rec, Philacycle), or with more specialized projects (Neighborhood Bike Works, Philly Goat Project, Coalition Against Hunger). Wherever your interests lie, there is an organization in Philly that would love your help.

Of course, this is just a small sample of the ways to get involved. You can always do your own research or come chat with our office for more ideas. When it comes to getting more involved in sustainability on and off campus, the sky’s the limit!
